Can regular television sets be adapted to accept HD channels?

I have a regular television set instead of a plasma flatscreen one. Can regular television sets be adapted to accept HD channels with satellite cable? If so, how? Thanks.

You won't be able to watch in HD - so no real advantage. The picture will be similar to what you see now.

A converter box is the only way I know of, but then the channels are actually in the box while your television stays on one channel.
