My company has made these. We looked for alternatives, but could find nothing. You risk wasting lots of time and money attempting to jury rig something. As it is, making the cabinet exactly and installing the hardware perfectly is quite a lot of work. When you're done, you want it to look and operate as planned, right? That hardware requires exacting specifications.
You can do this yourself. First make sure you have some decent carpentry skills. Then buy some gas springs and linear actuators, then you will be in business. http://www.firgelliauto.com is a good website to get supplies. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20080702230418AAfUwjb&kid=HqcmHXv4NjRC2gh5lFLE&s=comm&date=2009-01-02+12%3A42%3A18&.crumb=

You should be able to find a compromise. If you do it yourself and too cheaply, you risk ruining the TV. The lift mechanism is special and really, really smooth. (garage door mechanisms are not) You also need to allow for the wiring to be protected and that is a task in itself. I would talk to a home theater company and see what they have to offer.
