Why are they converting television to this new digital frequency?

Not that I have to worry about it, but I dont understand the whole thing and why would television stations have to spend this kind of money converting en masse like this? Any one know?

Each broadcast TV channel takes up a full 6MHz of spectrum.

You can fit a lot of communications in that (all of the FM stations from 98.1 to 104.1).

Some cell phone carriers can handle up to 300 simultaneous calls on each tower in their network with the same 6MHz that one TV station takes up.

So the FCC said to the broadcasters "you can't have it any more."

digital signals take up less bandwidth (frequency space) than does analog. Digital signals also carry more information. Given how many wireless applications need spectrum, this is a good thing.

1.More efficient use of limited spectrum

2. More wireless signals are in use now vs.when tv signals were first allocated.

None of the changes are for commerical gain or military use.

The Federal Government is giving the band width or the radio frequency waves which TV's transmit on to the military.

Besides it is the 21st century it makes sense that the country should catch up with the digital age

according to the people changing the television stations it is for opening communication lines for the army (ma by airplanes to) though

because of this the government will make a lot of money so this might

be for money

Well for one, the definition of the picture will be improving when the digiswitch is made.

It won't be all that noticeable to most, however.

I was actually wondering the same thing. So I see its a national thing. I thought maybe it was just in my area. Does it have to do with some type of government regulations.

Because your government figured out that by freeing up a multitude of frequencies, they can be sold for top dollar to telecommunications companies.

because analog tv (antenna)clog the airwaves and frequency with so many cell phone out not they have to make room

To fit TV stations in less RF spectrum, so the surplus can be sold off to the highest bidder.

so the government can use or sell them. Just plain greed
